Elite
Macintosh Volume #1 12/2/95
Community
-- Introduction
--------------------------------------------------------------
Welcome to EMC, issue #1!.
IÕve decided to create a newsletter for the elite Macintosh community,
as I was inspired by a newsletter out there for the elite IBM community.
I figured, what the hell, might as well go for it since the elite scene
has been kind of slow these days.
Many things could come from this, and I hope there are a few people out
there willing to help me out in my efforts, e-mail emc@ntbbs.mmbbs.com
for any information regarding EMC. In the future, I may also include an
h/p/a/c/v portion to this newsletter, as I find tons of the new stuff
quite interesting, whether it be hacking, phreaking, or anarchy.
As for the warez, well, this wonÕt tell you where to get them, but what
has been released this week, and the ratings will give you an idea of
whatÕs hot, and whatÕs not.
IÕm not an avid game player (except for Marathon!), so IÕll need from
people for rating new games that are released each week.
The overall purpose of this newsletter is to provide the elite Mac
community with information on new releases, new SN#Õs, urls to check out
in your spare time, and general run of the mill BS that may or may not
interest you. Hope you enjoy it, feel free to send any comments our
way!

-- 1. Warez - Week in Review
------------------------------------------------
Ahh, the release of two fine games this week: Marathon II and Descent.
Both were huge files, as both came from CDÕs this time, but who cares,
it was worth the wait for them.
* In no particular order *
EIAS 2.5.2
In case you missed it, version 2.5.2 of EIAS was released this past
week. This version only contains bug fixes the to the recent 2.5, as no
new features were installed. ItÕs an 8mb+ archive.
DeltaGraph Pro v3.5.3.FAT
Deltagraph Pro v3.5.3 was released this past week as well, only a one
disk ware, but still worth your download credits. DeltaGraph Pro 3.5.3
is the award winning charting and graphing program that meets your
charting needs. DGÕs vast import, export, and data linking options make
it easy to add charting power to your current applications. Simply load
data from your spreadsheet or database directly into DG, then export an
eye catching chart to your document or presentation, or print directly
from DG for sharp and clear results. Requires as little as a Mac Plus
and 4mbÕs of RAM.
DriveCD v5.2
Brought to you buy NEC, their latest cd-rom driver for any of their
drives, and mainly for the multi disk units theyÕve been selling. Users
of the multi disk version have noticed that when opening folders and
displaying file types and icons, the multispin cd-rom drive liked to
switch disks on them, all due to the way the MacOS is structured. This
current version fixes some of those problems, so make sure you get this
if youÕve got anything older! ItÕs only a 330k file.
Dabbler 2.0.FAT
Version 2.0 of this ware was released this past week, and tops over
9mbÕs. This is more of a beginnerÕs ware than a hard core graphic
artist, as it is only $30 and requires as little as 4mbÕs of ram. Go
figure.
Painter 4.0
Topping out at a mere 11mbÕs, Painter 4.0 has come out of the beta
stages. New in this version: Interface improvements like pull-down
menus, a Mask edit modem, a QuickCurve selection tool, and rules and
guidelines, Web Painter for creating Web graphics in gif and jpeg
formats, improved scripting and much much more.
Access PC 3.0.2
This was a small release, as it was only an update to version 3.0.2, but
nonetheless you should still get this if youÕre a DOS fan and absolutely
need to run DOS on your mac. The alternative to running the bloated
SoftWindows 2.0. 2.8 mbÕs.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Do note, this was a rather small list, as I wasnÕt keeping track of a
huge list of releases this past week, this above list only focuses on
major releases.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

----------------------------------------------------------------
Marathon II: Durandal v1.0
Hey, what can I say? This monstrous 32mb archive made itÕs way around
the country this week, as thousands are now enjoying the kick ass
Marathon II. Much better than the original, and much better network
play. Hopefully Bungie will release a modem <-> modem play feature
sometime soon.
Descent 1.0 *RELEASE*
After a long awaited release, this game is finally, here. I havenÕt
played it much, but most DOS-heads rave about it.

-- 4. Utils
----------------------------------------------------------------
With so much software out there now, and so little time to check out
everything, this section is for dynamite programs that everyone should
take a look at.
StickyClick 1.2
A freeware program that enables your menus to stay down when clicked,
much like a Windows environment. ItÕs quite handy when you have several
hierarchial menus, this way you donÕt need to be holding the mouse
button down while dragging the mouse all over the place. A very small
file, requires very little ram as well, I havenÕt come across any
conflicts.
SpeedDoubler 1.0.2
You would be stupid not to get this sweet ware. If you have a PPC, this
is a must have, as it definitely has an increase in 68k emulation in
your system, faster menus, faster windows display, faster ANYTHING 68k!
Make sure to get the updater for version 1.0.2, that is the most stable
version around.
DragStrip 2.0
THE launcher of all launchers. DragStrip is an unbelievable program
that fully supports drag and drop features, popup style menus when you
click and hold any icon, user configurable key commands allow you to
navigate through open programs without the use of your mouse or the
application menu. Is quite fast as well! DragStrip allows access to
applications, folders, control panels, ANYTHING by the click of a
button. Not a doubler click, but a single click (which most other
launcher programs do not support), and this means instant access to a
file/program/whatever it may be.
I strongly encourage you to check it out, as it does require a
significant amount of RAM (800k--but this is with 4 loaded palettes
running all at once), but well worth it.
InstantInit 1.0.2
Initialize your floppies in 3 seconds, erases Mac disks in not time, as
well as IBM disks. IBM disks are converted to Macintosh disks within 3
seconds. THE formatting utility of choice by many Mac users!
Retrospect 3.0.FAT
Need to schedule backups? This is THE backup program for the Mac, very
simple to figure out and use, as it provides several ways to back up
your files. Scheduling is completely configurable, as you can run
scripts at any time of the day, any time of the week, however many times
you want. You should also use this for making DATÕs, or any other
backups of Macintosh files, as it is completely reliable (and FAST
too!).

PopUp Folder 2.0.x or Apple Menu Options?
The more I used PopUp 2.0.x on my 6100, the more I found it conflicted
with. NowMenus and PopUp are a big no-no when run together. PopUp and
GregÕs Buttons 3.7.3 have their incompatibilities as well, as Pop up
fucks things up when GregÕs Buttons has the menus different colors than
the traditional black on white. PopUp folder 2.0.x was more buggy than
1.5, but is far superior in that of speed and features.
After installing a new system several times, I found that Apple Menu
Options is very fast, as you get instant access to hierarchial menus.
PopUp always had to go and ÔgetÕ the files within a hierarchial menu,
where as AMO is instantaneous.
Even hierarchial menus in regular programs, like ClarisWorks for
example, function much faster when AMO is installed vs. PopUp 2.0.x.
Sure PopUp 2.0.x was great when navigating in the finder, but AMO can be
an alternative if you just put aliases of your main volumes in your
Apple Menu Items folder.
PopUp seemed to run fine, with no other extensions (other than 7.5.x
extensions) installed--but who wants a Mac like that? I say Apple Menu
Items.
OpenTransport & MacSLIP woes
Subj: OpenTransport and MacSLIP
(57/57)
From: Jorn
To : All
Date: Tue, Nov 28, 1995 7:50:36 AM
Okay, after almost two months and numerous support calls to Apple, here
it is.
Open Transport and MacSLIP still DO NOT work together! This is as of OT
1.0.8
and MacSLIP 3.0.1.
You can install both components and have your system run fine. You can
even
make a SLIP connection just fine - ONCE! You see, OT writes some patches
into
the system, but those patches seem to get garbled once MacSLIP is used.
From
that point on, your computer will crash on startup if you have the OT
libraries loaded. If, by chance, you can get by that crash, your Mac
will not
open some applications, it may freeze randomly, etc.
Sure, the solution to your Internet SLIP connection is to downgrade to
MacTCP
and blow out the OT libraries and the TCP/IP control panel. That WILL
get you
a slip connection on your computer once more, but now you can no longer
network. The new version(s) of AppleTalk are dependent on Open
Transport.
AppleTalk will complain that you do not have OTGlobalLib installed. If
you
remember, the OT libraries are hosed.
Here is the solution: Use a PPP connection. Get either FreePPP (The guy
at
Apple really liked this one) or MacPPP. Both are very easy to set up,
and are
stable with Open Transport.
If you own a Power Mac x500, or any other Mac that uses Open Transport,
read
the above very carefully. (You can tell right away if OT is on you
computer if
the Network control panel has been replaced with a control panel called
AppleTalk.)
These results were determined in part by painful trial-and-error on the
following system:
Power Macintosh 9500/120
System 7.5.2 CD release 2.0
Open Transport 1.0.8 (upgrade from 1.0.6)
MacSLIP 3.0.1
NOTE: Be sure to use MacPPP 2.2.1. This version is compatible with OT.

lamers that reported there being AOL hacking programs on his site.
